They are primarily intended for the preservation of exceptional natural values<\/strong>. All the parks are different, either national or nature parks<\/strong>. Still, each one is truly unique<\/strong>.<\/p>

Tripadvisor<\/strong> has announced a list of the most visited<\/strong>, thus the most beautiful<\/strong>, the best national parks in Europe<\/strong> according to the visitor’s choice. Plitvice National park<\/strong> ended in third place.<\/p>

Plitvice lakes<\/strong> have been declared one of the most beautiful and most visited national parks<\/strong> by Lonely Planet<\/strong>, Road Affair<\/strong>, Pandotrip<\/strong>, European best destination<\/strong>, and many others.<\/p>

Plitvice Lakes<\/strong> is one of 8 national parks in Croatia<\/strong>, with Krka National Park<\/strong>, Mljet<\/strong>, Paklenica<\/strong>, Kornati<\/strong>, Brijuni<\/strong>, Risnjak<\/strong>, and Northern Velebit<\/strong>.<\/p>

The most famous National Parks<\/strong> is Plitvice Lakes<\/strong>, Krka<\/strong> and Brijuni<\/strong>.<\/p>

Plitvice Lakes<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0the largest and oldest park<\/span>, with its\u00a0mesmerizing lakes<\/span>\u00a0and environment, which is why they are\u00a0listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list<\/span>.<\/p>

The Plitvice Lakes National Park<\/span>,\u00a0Croatia’s most popular tourist attraction<\/span>, was\u00a0granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979<\/span>.<\/p>

Located roughly halfway between\u00a0capital city Zagreb<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0Zadar<\/span>\u00a0on the coast, in\u00a0the wooded mountainous region of Croatia<\/span>,\u00a0Lika County<\/span>.<\/p>

The Plitvice lakes National park<\/span>\u00a0consists of\u00a0sixteen lakes<\/span>\u00a0of various sizes, all containing\u00a0crystal clear cyan-colored water<\/span>\u00a0with numerous small\u00a0rivers<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0streams<\/span>.<\/p>

The lakes<\/span>\u00a0are interconnected by a series of\u00a0waterfalls<\/span>\u00a0and set in\u00a0deep woodland<\/span>\u00a0populated by\u00a0deer<\/span>,\u00a0bears<\/span>,\u00a0wolves<\/span>,\u00a0boars<\/span>, and\u00a0rare bird species<\/span>.<\/p>

Plitvice Lakes<\/span>\u00a0are divided into\u00a0the Upper Lakes<\/span>, which sit on impermeable dolomites, and\u00a0The Lower Lakes<\/span>, formed in permeable limestone substrate.<\/p>

It is convenient to mention that\u00a0Nikola Tesla<\/strong>, who\u00a0was born near the Plitvice Lakes National Park<\/strong>, is responsible for enjoying\u00a0Plitvice Lakes’ beauty<\/strong>.<\/p>

Tesla did not allow the natural power of the waterfall to turn into a hydroelectric power plant<\/strong>.
He did not allow such influence of man to destroy the\u00a0richness and beauty of nature that had been created for millennia<\/strong>.<\/p>

If you visit\u00a0Plitvice Lakes national park<\/strong>\u00a0a few times, it will look slightly different from before. In other words, these\u00a0unique plants<\/strong>\u00a0are known as\u00a0tufa generators<\/strong>\u00a0(algae, moss, and others), participate in the creation of travertine rocks that change the shape of the lakes.<\/p>

These formations are too fragile because they are composed of\u00a0calcite<\/strong>, and they’re particular in their hollowness.<\/p>

Of course, this means that they require a\u00a0high protection level<\/strong>\u00a0because this process isn’t nearly as simple as it seems.<\/p>

If we combine these three main elements \u2013 a\u00a0plethora of spring water<\/strong>,\u00a0tufa generators<\/strong>, and\u00a0the tufa<\/strong>, what we get is a\u00a0biological phenomenon of exceptional beauty<\/strong>!<\/p>

Every season, Plitvice Lakes paint the national park with different colors<\/strong>. You will not go wrong if you\u00a0visit them more than once<\/strong>.<\/p>

Walking along the Plitvice lakes, you can enjoy the natural harmony and beauty that engage all your senses<\/strong>.<\/p>

Surrounded by\u00a0sights<\/strong>\u00a0for sore eyes,\u00a0the clean mountainous air<\/strong>\u00a0filling your body while you enjoy\u00a0the calming sounds<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0the waterfalls<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0birds<\/strong>\u00a0chirping.<\/p>

The Krka National Park<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Krka National Park<\/span>\u00a0is located in the\u00a0\u0160ibenik-Knin County<\/span>\u00a0and covers\u00a0109 km\u00b2<\/span>\u00a0of the most beautiful course of\u00a0the Krka River<\/span>\u00a0and the lower course of\u00a0the \u010cikola River<\/span>.<\/p>

The Krka National Park<\/span>\u00a0is a vast and primarily unaltered area of\u00a0exceptional natural value<\/span>, including\u00a0preserved or insignificantly altered ecosystems<\/span>.
With its seven travertine\u00a0waterfalls<\/span>,\u00a0Bilu\u0161i\u0107a buk<\/span>,\u00a0Brljan<\/span>,\u00a0Manojlovac slap<\/span>,\u00a0Ro\u0161njak<\/span>,\u00a0Miljacka slap<\/span>,\u00a0Ro\u0161ki slap<\/span>, and\u00a0Skradinski Buk<\/span>, the Krka River is a natural and karst phenomenon.<\/p>

Including the submerged part of the river at the mouth,\u00a0the Krka River<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a072.5 km long<\/span>. It springs in\u00a0the foothills of the Dinara mountain range, 2.5 km northeast of Knin<\/span>.
The travertine\u00a0waterfalls<\/span>\u00a0of the Krka River are the fundamental phenomenon of this river.<\/p>

Krka can boast with lakes and waterfalls<\/span>. Interestingly,\u00a0the oldest hydroelectric power plant globally<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0the first one in Europe is located here<\/span>.\u00a0The hydroelectric power plant was built only three days after the first one in Niagara Falls<\/span>.<\/p>

In August<\/span>\u00a0at\u00a0the Krka National Park<\/span>\u00a0organizes\u00a0the Burnum Ides<\/span>.

Risnjak National Park<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Risnjak National Park<\/strong>\u00a0is located in\u00a0Gorski Kotar<\/strong>,\u00a0the most forested area of western Croatia<\/strong>, with\u00a063.5 km\u00b2<\/strong>\u00a0occupying the central part of the\u00a0Risnjak<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Snje\u017enik massifs<\/strong>\u00a0and the upper course of\u00a0the Kupa River<\/strong>\u00a0with its source part. The air distance from the top of\u00a0Veliki Risnjak<\/strong>\u00a0(1528m) to the sea is 15 km, and from the\u00a0Kupa<\/strong>\u00a0(321m) 8 km source. Thus, at only 23 km air distance, there are marked climatic differences. This is what makes\u00a0Risnjak<\/strong>\u00a0stand out,\u00a0a mountain that towers over all areas between land and sea that belonged to the National Park<\/strong>.<\/p>

The\u00a0lynx<\/strong>\u00a0is probably the\u00a0rarest<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0most hidden beast<\/strong>\u00a0that inhabits\u00a0Europe<\/strong>. Only a few hunters or naturalists find traces of a lynx or the animal itself.\u00a0The lynx<\/strong>\u00a0has so little that it is\u00a0rarely seen<\/strong>, and its presence is often overlooked. However, the lynx is an essential link in the food chain in the\u00a0Risnjak ecosystem<\/strong>. Besides, the\u00a0lynx<\/strong>\u00a0(RIS<\/strong>) also sponsored the name of\u00a0the National Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Paklenica<\/strong>\u00a0is fascinating because of its\u00a0forest and geomorphological characteristics<\/strong>, mostly visited by\u00a0climbers<\/strong>.<\/p>

Due to its\u00a0unique natural basis<\/strong>,\u00a0exceptional geomorphological shapes<\/strong>, and\u00a0magnificent forests<\/strong>,\u00a0Velika and Mala Paklenica’s<\/strong>\u00a0area was already\u00a0declared a national park in 1949<\/strong>.
The main reason for claiming this area as a national park was\u00a0protecting the best-preserved and largest forest complex in Dalmatia<\/strong>.<\/p>

Paklenica National Park covers 95 km\u00b2<\/strong>, on the slopes of\u00a0southern Velebit<\/strong>, and there are its\u00a0highest peaks – Vaganski vrh<\/strong>\u00a0(1757m \/ high) and\u00a0Sveto brdo<\/strong>\u00a0(1753 m \/ high). It includes\u00a0Velika and Mala Paklenica’s<\/strong>\u00a0torrent flows, i.e., their recognizable\u00a0canyons vertically incised<\/strong>\u00a0into the southern slopes of\u00a0Velebit<\/strong>\u00a0and the wider surrounding area.<\/p>

There is an\u00a0exceptional wealth of geomorphological phenomena<\/strong>\u00a0and shapes in a relatively small area,\u00a0diverse flora and fauna<\/strong>, attractive landscapes, and\u00a0untouched nature<\/strong>.
The diversity of the living world is conditioned by climatic characteristics and the rich and varied geological past.<\/p>

The Paklenica National Park’s<\/strong>\u00a0recognizable features are indigenous\u00a0black pine forests<\/strong>, several types of beech forests, and\u00a0deep canyons with streams – torrents Velika and Mala Paklenica<\/strong>.
The broader area of\u00a0NP Paklenica<\/strong>\u00a0is characterized by a\u00a0rich and diverse cultural heritage<\/strong>.<\/p>

The name Paklenic<\/strong>a most probably\u00a0comes from black pine resin<\/strong>, the\u00a0so-called “Pakline”<\/strong>\u00a0used by the local population in\u00a0folk medicine<\/strong>, for\u00a0healing wounds<\/strong>, then\u00a0as a lamp – for lighting and coating wooden boats<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The National Park Mljet<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The National Park Mljet<\/strong>\u00a0is classified as\u00a0“sea” National Parks<\/strong>. It covers part of the beautiful\u00a0island of Mljet<\/strong>\u00a0with its\u00a0pine trees<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0breathtaking lakes<\/strong>.
Mljet National Park is first Croatian marine protected area, founded on November 11, 1960.<\/strong>\u00a0Its special status of protection was significantly contributed by prominent\u00a0Croatian scientist and academic<\/strong>\u00a0Branimir Gu\u0161i\u0107<\/strong>.<\/p>

Mljet National Park covers almost 5,300 ha<\/strong>, including\u00a0the sea belt 500 m from the coast, islets, and cliffs, and occupies approximately one-third of the island<\/strong>. The bays submerged by the sea,\u00a0Small and Big lakes<\/strong>, are the most prominent locations in this area and an important\u00a0geomorphological and oceanographic phenomenon<\/strong>.<\/p>

The entire area of the park is affluent in life<\/strong>. The importance of its protection is evidenced by numerous endemic and endangered species.
According to the famous Greek myth, the nymph Calypso, the daughter of Atlantis, settled on the legendary Ogygia, today’s Mljet<\/strong>.<\/p>

Ancient Greek hero Odysseus<\/strong>\u00a0was returning home after many years of adventure and was the only survivor after the shipwreck. He managed to swim to the shores into\u00a0the Mljet Channel<\/strong>\u00a0and reached\u00a0Kalipsin’s island of Ogygia<\/strong>.\u00a0Calypso fell in love with Odysseus<\/strong>\u00a0and lived with him for several years,\u00a0preventing him from leaving Mljet island<\/strong>.

When we think of\u00a0the Kornati National Park<\/strong>, we mean the islands.\u00a0The Kornati are also protected<\/strong>, and only one-quarter of the area makes land.\u00a0Particularly interesting for divers<\/strong>.
The park includes a high-value marine water area<\/strong>. The mainland part of the park is distinct karst, limestone. That is why\u00a0all karst phenomena<\/strong>\u00a0are present here:\u00a0ravines<\/strong>,\u00a0oysters<\/strong>,\u00a0sinkholes<\/strong>, and\u00a0caves<\/strong>.<\/p>

The landscapes are perhaps most impressive on the island’s offshore side, where\u00a0cliffs rise above the sea<\/strong>. It is highest on\u00a0Klobu\u010dar<\/strong>\u00a0(80 m),\u00a0Mani<\/strong>\u00a0(65 m),\u00a0Ra\u0161ip Veliki<\/strong>\u00a0(64 m),\u00a0Obru\u010dan<\/strong>\u00a0(50 m), and\u00a0Pi\u0161keri<\/strong>\u00a0(45 m).\u00a0Submarine extensions plunge into the sea and ninety feet deep<\/strong>. Visitors are also visually impressed by the\u00a0horizontal layers of some islands<\/strong>, such as\u00a0Mali \u0160ilo<\/strong>. Brijuni is a favorite tourist destination with a rich history dating back to the third millennium BC<\/strong>.<\/p>

The National Park’s<\/strong>\u00a0present-day boundaries were set in 1999 and comprise the land, the surrounding sea with the seabed and cover an area of 33.9 km2.
The length of all island coastlines amounts to 46.8 km.\u00a0The most indented islands are Veliki Brijun<\/strong>\u00a0(25.9 km) and\u00a0Mali Brijun<\/strong>\u00a0(8.3 km).
The shores are mostly low and rocky<\/strong>\u00a0but easily accessible due to the horizontal stratification of the rocks. In some bays, gravel and sand can be found.\u00a0The Brijuni National Park includes 14 islands<\/strong>.<\/p>

Brijuni<\/strong>\u00a0is also known as the summer residence of\u00a0the late President of EX-Yugoslavia, Tito<\/strong>.\u00a0Brijuni thus entered the list of destinations gladly visited by the world’s politically powerful people<\/strong>,\u00a0statesmen<\/strong>,\u00a0presidents<\/strong>,\u00a0international jet-seters<\/strong>,\u00a0royal families<\/strong>, and many others.

Northern Velebit<\/strong>, founded in 1999, is the\u00a0youngest of eight national parks in Croatia<\/strong>.\u00a0This area of Velebit is a real mosaic composed of various habitats home to many plants, fungal and animal species whose wealth we have only just begun to discover<\/strong>.\u00a0This diversity of karst forms<\/strong>, living world, and landscapes, created mainly by man, was the reason for\u00a0the Northern Velebit National Park’s proclamation<\/strong>.<\/p>

Northern Velebit National Park<\/strong>\u00a0also includes several previously\u00a0protected areas<\/strong>. There are a strict reserve\u00a0Hajdu\u010dki and Ro\u017eanski kukovi<\/strong>,\u00a0botanical reserve Visibaba<\/strong>\u00a0– a site of endemic plants of\u00a0Croatian Siberia<\/strong>.\u00a0Botanical reserve Zavi\u017ean-Balinovac-Velika kosa<\/strong>, which includes the famous\u00a0Velebit Botanical Garden<\/strong>, declared a park architecture monument.<\/p>

North Velebit National Park<\/strong>\u00a0is a favorite among\u00a0hikers<\/strong>\u00a0due to the\u00a0large number of hiking trails<\/strong>. The value and beauty of the nature of Velebit have long been recognized.\u00a0Mount Velebit was included in 1978 in the network of world biosphere reserves<\/strong>. Three years later, the whole of Velebit becomes a nature park. There are even\u00a0two national parks in the south<\/strong>.<\/p>

The island itself is small, only 10km long and 8,5km wide.<\/p>

The sea is so crystal clear that you can see the bottom even very deep<\/strong>. On\u00a0Lastovo island<\/strong>, the walnuts were not allowed to be planted so that witches would not come to the island. Interestingly,\u00a0Lastovo is an island without poisonous snakes<\/strong>.<\/p>

The mountain range of the \u017dumberak and Samobor hills is one of the least populated areas in Croatia<\/strong>. Although\u00a0the capital of Croatia, Zagreb<\/strong>\u00a0is actually located on the slopes of\u00a0the Medvednica Nature Park<\/strong>. Thus,\u00a0Zagreb<\/strong>\u00a0also has a ski resort during the winter, less than an hour from the city.<\/p>

However,\u00a0Zagreb’s people are great admirers of Medvednica<\/strong>, and going to their nature park and to its highest peak,\u00a0Sljeme<\/strong>, on weekends is a way of life. A green mountain that keeps the back of a city of almost a million.\u00a0The man left a trace on Medvednica 45,000 years ago, when Neanderthals lived in the Veternica cave<\/strong>.<\/p>

Today it is home to\u00a018 species of bats<\/strong>. The mountain’s name preserves the memory that\u00a0bears<\/strong>\u00a0(medvjed in Croatian<\/strong>) also lived here in large numbers.\u00a0And a thousand-year-old yew tree may be hiding a red mushroom in the shade – a witch’s heart<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

Every step to the\u00a0highest peak, Sveti Jure at 1762 meters<\/strong>, will be unsurpassedly rewarded with a\u00a0panoramic view of the sea and islands<\/strong>,\u00a0Zagora, Bosnia’s mountains<\/strong>, and\u00a0Herzegovina<\/strong>\u00a0and neighboring\u00a0Italy<\/strong>.<\/p>

Heavenly Promenade<\/strong>, a horseshoe-shaped lookout point outside the cliff with a glass surface for walking, is called\u00a0the Skywalk Biokovo<\/strong>. It’s located in the southwestern part of the\u00a0Biokovo Nature Park<\/strong>, in\u00a0Ravna Vla\u0161ka<\/strong>, at an altitude of 1228 meters above sea level. In addition to its proud heights, the mountain also has unimaginable depths.\u00a0Over 400 pits and caves have been discovered<\/strong>.<\/p>

Some of them are forever full of snow and ice<\/strong>\u00a0that withstand even the hottest sun. People inhabited the area of\u00a0Biokovo<\/strong>\u00a0before the letters appeared. Dinara was declared the 12th nature park in the Republic of Croatia in February 2021<\/strong>.
The park includes the\u00a0Croatian<\/strong>\u00a0part of the\u00a0Dinara<\/strong>,\u00a0Troglav<\/strong>, and\u00a0Kame\u0161nica mountains<\/strong>, the source and upper part of\u00a0the Cetina river<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0the karst fields Hrvata\u010dko<\/strong>,\u00a0Pa\u0161ko<\/strong>, and\u00a0Vrli\u010dko<\/strong>.\u00a0It covers two counties – Split and \u0160ibenik<\/strong>\u00a0and covers an area of almost 63,000 hectares.<\/p>

Dinara is the most valuable natural karst unit globally<\/strong>, with a thickness of deposits exceeding eight kilometers.\u00a0It is rich in endemic and endangered species<\/strong>. It is home to\u00a0over a thousand plant species<\/strong>.
