The best-preserved castle

Museum with a permanent exhibition

Trakošćan Castle, built in the 13th century, is surely one of the most interesting castles in Croatia. It was named after the Thracian fortress. Thracians are ancient indo-European tribes that moved to Eastern Europe to settle. Another story says that Trakošćan got his name after the Knights Drachenstein who supposedly, ruled the region in the early Middle Ages. In 1569. The owners of the castle became “Draskovich” who are Croatian noble family that for many centuries played an important role in Croatian history. The eldest son George is credited for the baronial title which they received from King Maximilian in 1567. His brother Gaspar, two years later, together with George got to use the castle Trakošćan. Gaspar is the only one who had offspring. Trakošćan Castle is a real cultural heritage and extremely well preserved. Today the castle is owned by the Republic of Croatia and in 1954. Was established as a museum with a permanent exhibition. This beautiful castle is real “Croatian medieval treasure”. It is a must visit place in Croatia!
