Luka Modric was declared the best footballer of Europe in the election of the European Football Federation (UEFA).
The captain of the Croatian national team and Real Madrid midfielder has collected 313 points from 55 journalists and 80 coaches who played last year the Champions League and the Europe League. Behind him was the triple winner of this award with 223 points Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah with 134 points. Only moments before being called the best football player, Modric has also proclaimed the best midfielder in Europe.
This is the Zadar native’s second big prize in just over a month after winning the Golden Ball in Russia for the best World Cup player. Modric was thankful to the teammates in his celebratory speech and pointed out who was the most deserving of this prestigious prize.
Modrić said: “I am most thankful to my father. He was the person who brought me to my first training, always pushed me to fight for my dreams, never give up and believe in myself. I owe him a lot!” said Modrić and proved once again what means to be humble even when you’re at the top of the world!
