The Valun tablet

As well to the Baška tablet, there is also one other significant monument for Croatian history. The Valun tablet is one of the oldest Croatian epigraphic monuments dating from the 9th century.

It was named after a small place of Valun on Cres island, after which the tablet got its name. The purpose of the tablet was one of the tombstones containing two short texts of identical content written in Croatian and Latin and two scripts- Latin and Glagolitic. The text on the tombstone carries great importance since it mentions family members of three generations as a testimony of contemporary ethnic and linguistic coexistence and cohabitation of the old Roman and new Croatian population on the Cres island.
