Krapanj sponges have developed incredible adaptations to thrive in their unique underwater environment. These sponges are masters of water filtration, actively pumping water through their porous bodies to capture food particles.

NASA’s revelation for Space-Age research

The American space agency may seem an unlikely collaborator for a small Croatian island. Still, Krapanj sponges have found their way into the realm of space exploration. Scientists at NASA have been studying these sponges to understand their water filtration mechanisms. These insights have inspired innovative water filtration systems for space shuttles and the International Space Station (ISS).

A Timeless Tradition

For centuries, the island of Krapanj has been steeped in the timeless tradition of sponge collection, a craft passed down through generations. The Adriatic Sea’s rugged coastline and crystal-clear waters have provided these remarkable sea creatures an ideal habitat. Locals, often starting as young as ten, would dive into the depths armed with nothing but a net and a keen eye. This was a perilous endeavor in the early days, as they relied solely on lung capacity and experience to scour the seabed for sponges. These traditional divers were known as “spužvari,” and their expertise was honed through years of practice. They would free-dive to astounding depths, sometimes reaching up to 40 meters, displaying an unparalleled connection with the sea. Today, while modern technology has made the process safer, the heart of this tradition still beats strong in Krapanj, preserving a centuries-old way of life.

The People Behind the Expeditions

Nestled on the captivating island of Krapanj, the Krapanj Sponge Museum owes its existence to the unwavering dedication of the Tanfara family. Their story is intertwined with the island’s history, dating back generations. The Tanfaras, originally fishermen, discovered their passion for preserving Krapanj’s unique heritage when family patriarch Ivan Tanfara, stumbled upon a treasure trove of antique sponge diving equipment in the attic of their ancestral home. This serendipitous discovery ignited a flame of curiosity and commitment that would shape their family’s destiny.
