Stop, look down… and find the Little Zagreb

Some stories are always welcome – like the story of Little Zagreb!

Again, the “Little Zagreb” project started. This year, the unique project made of miniature installations is in Zagreb once more. It is a series of miniature installations set within the busy and some of the most interesting streets of Zagreb. The tiny compositions look reminiscent of the facades of Zagreb’s residential buildings and the shop windows of Zagreb’s once-usual shops and crafts.

14 locations in the center of Zagreb

This year, the installations are set at 14 locations in the center of Zagreb. The author of the project, artist and director Filip Filković Philatz, together with his collaborators (Mia Martinović, Josip Kresović, and Lucija Švob) continued the story of Little Zagreb, this time showing carefully arranged shop windows such as watchmaking, tailoring, and shoemaking. This year we can find shops and cafes, Zagreb’s traditional crafts, all of them in miniature proportions.

Filip noted that through his work he wants to encourage the return of crafts. “In my other works, primarily documentary series, I am optimistic about the return of old crafts and trades. This was an ideal opportunity to stage some of them through this project. What we may sometimes lack in our vicinity, this time we can bring back to us, in small size. “

The director of the Zagreb Tourist Board, Martina Bienenfeld, said on this occasion: “The new edition of Little Zagreb – a project we premiered last year, comes at a time when tourist traffic in our city is intensifying. Little Zagreb, as a project that immediately touched our hearts, is a unique artistic attraction and creates a sustainable offer for our fellow citizens and tourists. With its discreet appearance, Little Zagreb always creates a desirable moment of surprise for everyone who sees it, and to facilitate the search, a special map was created that includes all locations, and can be downloaded from Visitor Centers or online, on the project website.”

The returns of old crafts and trades

The series of works “Little Zagreb” draws our attention to small things in life. It reminds us that you have to start small to develop into large and significant. Small works are inspired by those crafts and businesses that originated a long time ago in our city, such as small family businesses, and with the perseverance and vision of their owners have become successful and appreciated.

Just like last year, the installations are placed somewhere underneath our feet, so look carefully, best with a map in your hands, and go in search of Little Zagreb. You will be able to look for works on the streets of Zagreb from May 7 to September 30, 2022.
