Timeless Creations: The Beginnings and History

As early as the 19th century, the Blažeković family’s craft was among the most significant in many Croatian towns. Their honey and wax products were essential to daily life and holiday traditions. In 1953, Franjo Blažeković established the workshop “Blažeković Medičar i Voskar,” laying the foundation for preserving the traditional crafts of licitars and candle-making in Osijek.

More than three decades later, in 1985, his daughter Antonija Ranogajec and her husband Josip took over the workshop. Diligently learning the secrets of this unique craft, they continued the family tradition and became among the few artisans dedicated to preserving this rich cultural heritage.

In 2009, the Croatian Chamber of Trades and Crafts awarded Antonija the status of an artistic and traditional craftswoman, cementing the Blažeković name as one of the finest in licitars and candle-making across Croatia. Her artistic expression and craftsmanship have been showcased in several significant projects, including the “Licitar and Gingerbread Making—Crafts of Age-Old Tradition” exhibition at the Ethnographic Museum Zagreb, the “Zoete Zonde” exhibition in Rotterdam, and the 34th International Exhibition 100 PRESEPI held at the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome. In a particular project by Croatia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, a Christmas tree adorned with Blažeković’s licitar ornaments was displayed in the Vatican in 2002. The workshop was honored most when inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Blažeković workshop, led by Antonija Ranogajec and her family, stands as living proof that by preserving traditional values, even a small family business can achieve greatness. Their success is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and a deep love for their craft.

Carrying the Torch: Continuing the Tradition

Since inheriting the workshop from her father, Antonija Ranogajec has maintained her unique expression through a deep understanding of the craft. Every product she creates carries a piece of her personality, ensuring high aesthetic and artisanal value.

Her skill has been recognized by numerous artists and cultural figures, including Dragan Strišković, Professor Miroslav Šutej, and Professor Ines Krasić, through projects like the Baranja Colony and the “Wonderful World of Angels” exhibition. These collaborations have brought Antonija recognition not only as a craftsman but also as an artist.

Innovation in Tradition

Although the Blažeković workshop remains firmly rooted in tradition, it hasn’t shied away from innovation. By blending traditional recipes with modern production techniques, they have expanded their offerings and attracted a broader audience. In today’s digital age, Antonija understands the importance of preserving tradition through social media, where she promotes the workshop and showcases its creations to a global audience. This innovative approach has allowed the family’s work to reach people worldwide.

Her efforts have culminated in including licitar craftsmanship on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, further confirming the importance of this craft.

Whether you’re searching for the perfect gift, a licitar will transport you back to your childhood, or wish to support local artisans, Blažeković products offer an exquisite taste experience and a touch of history, lovingly crafted into every piece.
