A small place in the heart of rocky Pelješac, Putniković, has always lived with vines and wine. In the last decades, the growth of tourism created an ideal combination that fits into the Rural Development of the Republic of Croatia.
The agricultural cooperative Putniković was founded in 1911 by families from Putniković and surrounding places.
Connoisseurs of viticulture skills from Pelješac, decide to open the First Croatian Museum of Viticulture and Enology encouraged by similar projects in Spain (Museo del vino Malaga), Italy (Museo di Greve in Chianti), and some others,
This project is an additional incentive for young families who have decided to continue living on Pelješac to live and work.
Pelješac is known as the empire of wine. As a supplement to the concept of rural development in 2019, the First Croatian Museum of Viticulture and Enology was opened in Putniković.
The desire to connect the new values brought by tourism and traditional grapes and wine production creates the idea of a Museum in the Cooperative House building. It is a unique example in Croatia, and perhaps in the world, one cooperative opens a museum.
More than ten years passed from the idea to the realization, but the effort paid off.
The first Croatian museum of viticulture and winemaking within PZ Putniković covers more than 800 square meters. It consists of three collections – the House of Wine Tradition, the Historical Development of the Vine in this area, and Wines in the Tradition of Living. Visitors will discover the role of wine in rural and civic communities, the label designs from a century ago, the famous vintners, how the land was once cultivated, what tools were used, and what customs were related to wine…
In vino veritas, will be much understandable after visiting this tremendous tourist attraction in the south Dalmatia, on the Pelješac peninsula.
