Assumption of Mary: The Celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On August 15th, the Catholic Church worldwide celebrates the Assumption of Mary, also known as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This important feast is dedicated to the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken into heaven with both body and soul, signifying her special status in heaven.
The Blessed Virgin Mary– The Queen of the Croats – is associated with Croats’ faith and cultural identity, which, throughout history, have been seen in her as a symbol of their faith, hope, and national unity. This is why the Feast of the Assumption is one of the most important Croatian Catholic celebrations. In many Croatian churches, chapels, and shrines, there are images and statues of the Virgin Mary – Queen of the Croats, with particularly well-known places of worship, including Marija Bistrica, Trsat, and Sinj.
According to Catholic theology, Mary was assumed in spirit and with her entire being, highlighting her pure and holy nature. This belief has a long tradition dating back to the earliest Christian communities. However, official recognition of this dogma occurred on November 1, 1950, when Pope Pius XII declared the dogma of Mary’s Assumption into heaven.
The Assumption represents the pinnacle of Marian devotion. It reminds believers of the importance of the Mother of God in their spiritual lives and her role as a protector and mediator between God and man.
