Experience the magic of the Porcijunkulovo cultural and tourist event, which takes place from July 28. until August 2, 2023..
Days of colorful moments and positive emotions in Čakovec
Porcijunkulovo was initially conceived as a “Traditional Crafts Fair” related to the church holiday “Our Lady of the Angels – Portijunkule (2.08.)
Traditional religious customs developed over the years, attracting believers and merchants from Croatia, Slovenia, and Hungary. This is evidenced today by the central mass in the Franciscan church of St. Nicholas the Bishop, performed in Croatian, Slovenian and Hungarian, and is also known for the portional absolution, which forgives all sins.
Every year Porcijunkulovo takes place at the end of July and the beginning of August. The solemn procession and mass celebration on August 2 is the primary basis of the entire event.
Traditional customs and crafts
Today, the event combines contemporary and traditional customs. In addition to traditional forgiveness and religious ceremonies, drama performances, creative and educational workshops, and performances for children are held, large concerts are held on the big stage at the foot of the Old Town (famous faces of the Croatian variety show), art and painting exhibitions, street performances.
Among the more attractive are the displays, workshops, and presentations of old crafts representing the customs of the Međimurje region. Some of the events are already recognizable features of the event: the International Oldtimer Meeting, the Međimurje Children’s Festival (Mali MEF), the promotion of winemakers (“Vino-Grad” – the irresistible world of Međimurje drops), “Be the happy story of a bear” (festival of stuffed animals organized by of MURID, humanitarian and sustainable character), performances of Cultural Art Societies.
It’s all about white and orange this year at Porciunkulovo
The symbol of Porciunkulovo is the hanging umbrellas placed along the main street in the city’s center (Kralja Tomislava Street). They are different colors every year but always colorful. This year they have refreshed again, so now the town is decorated with white and orange colors. They are the bait for visitors who walk underneath, look around, listen to street musicians and take photos.
The core of Porciunkulov is the exhibitors and sellers of traditional and food products (artisans and OPG members from the northwestern region, as well as artists). They are scattered around the city, and with their offer, they also tempt visitors to take away memories from Porcijunkulovo. You can find honey products, handmade jewelry, unique items, checkers, brooms, homemade oils, brandies, liqueurs, and meat and bakery products. The langos are also unavoidable, in front of which there is always a long line of people.
The festival brings something new each year, and this year it is: a new stage, the so-called urban stage, which is located in Rudolf Kropek Park, and its festival name are Urban Parkić.
Renowned local urban and alternative music performers and DJs perform in Urban Park.
Schedule of concerts in Urban Parkić (start at 9:00 p.m.)
If you visit Porcijunkulovo, you’ll see the art installation, the so-called SelfiČ – a steel sculpture in the shape of the letter Č (for Čakovec) with a heart cut out on top, which represents a tick. The installation was created by the artist Nikola Vudrag. The installation is placed in the city’s center, facing the hanging umbrellas.
Staylicious Međimurje
For the youngest visitors, there is a large children’s zone. In addition to the “small amusement park” (trampolines, inflatables, merry-go-rounds, sweets…), creative children’s workshops and performances occur daily.
Admission fee to all programs and concerts is free.
After the concerts, visitors retreat to the center of Čakovec for the evening and night program of catering establishments (concerts and performances by DJs). Porcijunkulovo brings together the best that Međimurje offers in a Staylicious arrangement!
