Medvednica, the Green Escape at Zagreb’s Doorstep

Nature – Just Minutes Away from the City

Just a few kilometers from the center of Zagreb rises a natural gem that completely changed my perception of the city: Medvednica, the true green lung of the Croatian capital.

Interestingly, the name “Medvednica” comes from “medvjed,” the Croatian word for bear, which is why some locals affectionately refer to it as “Might Bear Mountain.” The name is a poetic nod to the wildlife that once roamed here. This mountain range, entirely covered in lush, dense forest, seems to stretch endlessly, offering visitors a breath of fresh air and full immersion in nature. For the people of Zagreb, it’s an incredible privilege to have such a site right next door—like a massive private garden, always ready to provide an escape from urban life. That’s precisely what everyone is looking for!

From a Major City to the Heart of Nature

As a French Erasmus student, I chose Zagreb for its appeal: it’s a major city, well-connected, and culturally rich. What I didn’t expect was how quickly I could escape the urban setting and find myself surrounded by nature.
In less than thirty minutes, I was in the heart of Medvednica—a green, peaceful environment that reminded me of the Alpine landscapes. I can only imagine how breathtaking it must be to see the mountain change with the seasons, especially in autumn when the forest is likely covered in warm, fiery colors.

It really fits with the current travel mindset, the slow travel trend is booming, and Medvednica is the perfect example of a destination where you can take your time, reconnect with nature, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

History and Legends of Medvedgrad

History is also deeply rooted here. I haven’t visited Medvedgrad yet, but it’s high on my list. This medieval castle, built in the 13th century on the southern slopes of Medvednica, was originally constructed to protect Zagreb from invasions.
From what I’ve read and heard, it offers incredible views over the city and carries a strong historical and symbolic presence. There’s even a local legend about the Black Queen, said to haunt the ruins, which adds a layer of mystery. I’m very curious to experience it in person!

Sljeme Tower and the Best View Over Zagreb

Further up stands Sljeme Tower, the highest point of Medvednica and a well-known local landmark. The panoramic view is absolutely stunning: Zagreb stretches out below, and Slovenia is visible just across the nearby border.
Around the tower, you’ll find ski slopes and lifts (closed during summer), and several cozy mountain restaurants that reminded me of high-altitude Alpine spots. These offer local specialties in a relaxed, scenic atmosphere, just like mountain holidays back home. For me, this is a must-see when visiting Zagreb.

The Sljeme Cable Car: An Easy Way Up

There’s also a convenient alternative to driving or hiking to the top: the Sljeme Cable Car. This modern gondola lift takes you from the base of the mountain to the summit in just a few minutes.
Recently modernized, it’s both affordable and accessible, perfect for families or casual hikers. I saw many mountain bikers using it, and it really made me want to try it too!

Tech-Enhanced Hiking

Medvednica now even has its own mobile app and website. I found an interactive map, hiking routes, water sources, and waterfalls—some of which I saved for future visits.
The app is available in English, which made everything super easy to navigate despite not speaking Croatian. It enhanced the entire experience, making the mountain feel even more welcoming and accessible.

A Hidden Gem in Croatia’s Interior

This was my first visit to Medvednica, and it truly left a strong impression. It’s such a major part of what makes Zagreb special and unique. How lucky are the locals to have such an incredible forest right at their doorstep?
I’m already planning more weekend visits, especially this summer, to enjoy the natural coolness of the forest while walking and exploring during the hot weather.

If you’re planning your next trip, don’t overlook inland Croatia. Many travel guides focus on the coast, but destinations like Medvednica offer a more authentic, natural side of the country.
This spot should absolutely be included in any Croatia itinerary or custom-made Croatia tours, especially for nature lovers and active travelers. It’s also perfect for those seeking the best places to visit in Croatia, far from the typical tourist crowds.
