Where flavors, music, and art take over Croatia’s most surprising fortress city.
A Festival That Redefines Eastern Croatia
When travelers dream of Croatia, their minds often drift to the shimmering Adriatic — Dubrovnik’s walls, Split’s palace, Hvar’s nightlife. But venture east, and you’ll find something unexpected, authentic, and utterly captivating.
In Osijek, the beating heart of Slavonia, the HeadOnEast Festival transforms this elegant Baroque city into a feast for all the senses. My first weekend there happened to align perfectly with this annual celebration — and I couldn’t have chosen a better introduction to Croatia’s most underrated region.
And unfortunately — this is only a review. You’ll have to wait a whole year to experience what I just did!

A Fortress Turned Playground for the Senses
From October 2nd to 5th, Osijek’s historic fortress (Tvrđa) — the largest preserved Baroque fortress in Croatia — bursts into life. The cobblestone streets become a kaleidoscope of color, music, and aromas.

Imagine live bands filling the air with rhythm, outdoor stalls serving sizzling Kulen, hearty stews, honey, and local cheeses, while winemakers pour their best vintages with pride. Even a Ukrainian wine made an unexpected appearance — proof that this festival is full of delightful surprises.
Now celebrating its 7th edition, HeadOnEast draws more than a hundred exhibitors: passionate artisans, creative locals, and proud producers sharing the flavors of their land.
HeadOnEast is not just a festival — it’s a love letter to Slavonia, where every flavor tells a story.

More Than Food and Wine: A Celebration of Creativity
HeadOnEast goes far beyond indulgence. It’s also about community, curiosity, and creativity.
One of the highlights this year was HeadOnKviz, a lively general-knowledge quiz hosted by Dean Kotiga, Osijek’s favorite quizmaster and influencer. His humor and energy brought crowds together in laughter and friendly competition — the perfect reflection of Osijek’s warm spirit.

When Night Falls, the Magic Begins
As dusk settled over the fortress, something extraordinary happened. Light installations illuminated centuries-old walls, transforming the Baroque architecture into living art. The blend of history and modern imagination created dreamlike scenes that left both children and adults in awe.

Families gathered at the Children’s Creation Center and Art Livada, where crafts, workshops, and laughter filled the evening air.
And for those unwilling to say goodnight, the Pecs Zone kept the energy high with top-notch DJs spinning until late — a perfect spot to dance off a few wine-fueled calories.
By night, Osijek glows with colors, music, and joy — a festival that seduces every sense.

The Spirit of Osijek: Authenticity and Hedonism
What struck me most wasn’t just the festival’s scale or creativity — it was the authenticity. There’s something refreshingly real about Osijek. Locals embrace visitors like friends, and the entire event feels like a shared secret — the kind you can’t help but tell everyone about afterward.

I’ll soon share my full impressions of Osijek itself, but this first taste has already convinced me: Eastern Croatia knows how to celebrate life.
So, if you’ve ever needed a reason to head east, here it is — HeadOnEast Festival is your invitation to experience Croatia’s most genuine joy, one glass of wine and one song at a time.
