There are many ways to arrive in Istria. Most people drive. Some sail. A few wander in slowly, village by village. But once a year, in the soft green awakening of early May, a different kind of traveler arrives—on gravel roads, guided by rhythm, appetite, and curiosity.

NOVA Eroica Istria – Truffle Tour is not simply a cycling event. It is a way of experiencing Istria as it was meant to be discovered: slowly, sensorially, and with just enough effort to earn every view, every glass of wine, every plate scented with truffle.

A springtime journey through Istria’s white roads, where gravel cycling meets truffles, wine, and the art of slow travel

Taking place on May 1st and 2nd, 2026, this two-day festival transforms Novigrad and the rolling hinterland of northwestern Istria into something far more evocative than a sporting venue. It becomes a stage for one of the most compelling spring rituals in Croatia, where cycling, gastronomy, and landscape merge into a single, deeply satisfying experience.

After a successful debut, NOVA Eroica returns with greater confidence and richer texture, drawing an international community of riders who understand that the real luxury today is not speed—but immersion.

What makes this event distinctive is not distance or difficulty, but philosophy. Inspired by the Italian Eroica heritage, it celebrates “white roads”—those pale gravel routes that cut through vineyards, olive groves, and hilltop villages—as pathways into a more authentic rhythm of travel.

Here, the ride is not separate from the destination. It is the destination.

The first day unfolds gently, almost ceremonially. May Day in Karpinjan sets the tone with a relaxed picnic, live music, and that unmistakable Mediterranean ease that turns time into something elastic. Families join a non-competitive ride, moving through the landscape without urgency, while elsewhere, cyclists in vintage attire glide past on restored bicycles—an affectionate nod to cycling’s romantic past.

It is a day that reminds you: not everything needs to be optimized, timed, or measured.

Ride, taste, and drift through northern Istria as NOVA Eroica transforms cycling into a celebration of landscape, gastronomy, and rhythm

Then, on May 2nd, the experience deepens. The routes—Truffle, Teran, and Malvasia—are not just distances on a map, but narratives through terrain. The Truffle route, stretching 150 kilometers into the heart of Istria, is a full-bodied immersion, weaving through forested interiors and historic villages where the scent of earth and oak hints at what lies beneath: truffles, the region’s quiet luxury.

The Teran route offers a more balanced rhythm, a dialogue between gravel and asphalt, vineyards and open countryside. It is perhaps the most “Istrian” of the three—varied, generous, and quietly complex.

And then there is Malvasia. Shorter, softer, but no less evocative. Ideal for those who understand that pleasure does not need to be extreme to be memorable.

What elevates NOVA Eroica beyond most cycling events is its refusal to separate effort from reward. Along the routes, refreshment stops are not functional pauses but curated encounters with Istria’s identity: truffles shaved generously, olive oil with peppery depth, local wines that reflect the soil beneath your wheels.

This is where the event reveals its true nature—not a race, but a moving feast.

Back in Novigrad, the atmosphere shifts again. The town becomes a lively, elegant hub where cyclists, locals, and visitors blend effortlessly. The EXPO area, tastings, and music create a sense of shared celebration, but never overwhelm the experience. It remains grounded, human, and distinctly Istrian.

For travelers who understand the value of timing, this is one of the most rewarding moments to visit the region. Spring in Istria is still under the radar—lush, fragrant, and far less crowded than the summer months. The landscapes feel alive, the light is softer, and the entire region breathes more freely.

That is where Istria reveals its depth.

NOVA Eroica Istria is, ultimately, an invitation. Not just to ride, but to reconsider how we travel. To exchange speed for texture. To replace checklists with sensations. To arrive somewhere not just geographically, but emotionally.

And perhaps that is the real reason to be here,  not for the kilometers, but for everything that happens in between.
