Let it be the Festival of Lights in Zagreb

Spring and light have always been two intertwined terms.

Spring is like a gentle awakening from winter sleep: the days are longer, the light falls on the towns and forests, rivers and mountains. It brings life onto the streets, into the parks, and into our hearts. All around us is filled with a new kind of energy that reaches us through light.

It is no wonder that spring brings hope and optimism into our hearts. The gentle touch of spring sunshine invites us to stick together, to celebrate the arrival of this magical season in peace and friendship.

In Zagreb, we will greet spring in a truly unique way.

Let’s shine together

From March 16th till March 20th, imagination, creativity, innovation, art, and technology will ‘shine’ together into the Festival of Lights Zagreb 2022.

Zagreb is a city that loves to live outdoors, a city in which residents will go into the streets, sit on the terraces and enjoy the view of this mild sunshine falling on their city. So it comes as no surprise that an entire festival will be dedicated to the arrival of light, the same one that will invite the residents into their outdoor living rooms.

And this year, these living rooms will be extraordinary.

Streets, squares, parks, and other sights are becoming art canvases for those magical light installations, through which the artists will show you their visions of well-known locations.

16 locations of the Upper Town and, for the first time, 15 locations of the Lower Town, and two international collaborations with artists from Berlin and Sarajevo are new. Thus, guests from Sarajevo will symbolically place an interactive light sculpture – the Heart of Europe – on the European Square.

Just as the spring invites us to stick together, this light gathers us, invites us to enjoy the spectacle together, and eases our hearts with a special kind of peace.

Five days, numerous locations, one city

The light will shine on various buildings throughout the Upper and Lower town, transform the old city center in a modern and unusual manner, and invite other performance arts to join them in this oasis of peace and brightness.

Modern technology and visual arts will join forces with concerts, dances, and performance works and create a unique experience for all generations. Sun does shine throughout the day, and the city will continue it through the night.

The grand opening is on Wednesday, March 16, at 18:00 at the Croatian National Theater. As in previous years, light shows will be from 6 to 11 PM.
