For its 77th edition, taking place from 10 July to 25 August, this unmissable event invites visitors to enjoy almost a month and a half of performances in a breathtaking setting. Considered one of Croatia’s most prestigious festivals, it promises an exceptional programme, enhanced by the history and unique beauty of Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik, an Open-Air Stage
This summer will be a hot one in Croatia, and not only because of the weather. The 77th Dubrovnik Summer Festival is raising the temperature as it opens its doors in a truly spectacular setting. Dubrovnik is not simply the city hosting the festival; it is its very soul. It enhances it, brings it to life and gives it all of its magic.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic city, nicknamed the “Pearl of the Adriatic” and also the “Athens of the Adriatic,” captivates visitors with its medieval walls, charming Old Town, sun-drenched squares, lively centre and remarkable architectural heritage. Throughout the summer, every stone, every square and every fortress becomes an open-air stage where art comes to life.
Let the Show Begin!
“O lijepa, o draga, o slatka slobodo” (“Oh beautiful, oh dear, oh sweet freedom”). These words from Marin Gundulić’s famous Hymn to Liberty seem to make the walls of Dubrovnik tremble. They echo in front of St. Blaise’s Church, officially kicking off this colourful festival.
This grand musical and theatrical performance, conducted by Ivan Repušić and performed by the Munich Radio Orchestra, continues the tradition of raising the Libertas flag, the symbol of Dubrovnik’s identity and spirit. It is a solemn, emotional and spectacular moment that immediately sets the tone for this year’s edition.
And once again, this annual event has nothing to envy from previous editions.
A Five-Star Line-up
The programme includes more than 70 performances combining theatre, music, dance and folklore, including eight new theatre productions that highlight the richness and diversity of this year’s edition.
Theatre lovers will be able to discover The Miser by Marin Držić, Shakespeare’s famous Richard III, performed at the magnificent Fort Lovrjenac, as well as The Fishermen’s Quarrels by Carlo Goldoni, also staged at this iconic venue.
Renowned actors such as Frano Mašković will share the stage with talented artists, including soprano Marija Kuhar Šoša or Khatia Buniatishvili, to offer audiences performances of the highest quality.
And I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge fan of classical dance. I already can’t wait to see “Dubrovnik Dance Dream – Small Steps Towards Great Dreams,” performed by the Luka Sorkočević Art School at the Marin Držić Theatre. I’m sure it will be a wonderful performance. For the record, this show, designed for both children and adults, follows the artistic journey, through the seasons, of a young girl from Dubrovnik whose greatest dream is to become a ballerina.
