Magic of Music under the stars, in the heart of the Croatian Capital

Every summer, Zagreb transforms into an open-air stage where the finest works of classical music come to life. Once again this year, from June 19 to July 2, 2025, the prestigious Zagreb Classic festival will take over the magnificent King Tomislav Square, right in front of the Art Pavilion, offering the public eight exceptional free evenings dedicated to symphonic music, opera, jazz, and even musicals.

An unmissable cultural event

Organized by the Zagreb Tourist Board (TZGZ) in partnership with the City of Zagreb and various cultural institutions, Zagreb Classic has, over the years, become one of the highlights of the city’s summer cultural scene. Since its creation in 2016, the festival has earned a cult status among artists and music lovers alike. Above all, it represents a meeting between the people of Zagreb and classical music in a relaxed, open-air setting beneath the summer stars.

Among the festival’s highlights is the screening of Johann Strauss II’s operetta Cervantes on June 27, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the “King of the Waltz”, in collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum. Another major event will be the world premiere of the oratorio Anno Domini 925: King Tomislav by Matej Meštrović on July 2, composed to mark the 1100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom.
This monumental performance will bring together 233 musicians from Croatia and the USA, under the baton of American maestro Jonathan Griffith.

Croatia and classical music: A passionate connection

One of the reasons Zagreb Classic continues to captivate audiences is that Croatia has a long and passionate relationship with classical music. Composers such as Vatroslav Lisinski, the father of Croatian opera, and Dora Pejačević, a significant figure in late Romantic music, are symbols of this rich musical tradition, which remains relatively unknown internationally. With renowned conservatories, orchestras, and summer festivals from Dubrovnik to Split, Croatia quietly stands as a refined destination for music lovers. Zagreb, as the cultural capital, is at the heart of this vibrant musical scene!
